'Doctor Who' star lands NBC pilot
I am quite excited for this and am planning on watching it. Because. David Tennant! On American TV. I mean, even if he has to put on an American accent it'll still be awesome.
yey!

I had this whole post thought out.
But then I realized that it was pretty petty and decided not to.
I also starting thinking almost exclusively in French.
I blame the late drunken nights in Paris and Strasbourg. I'm such an intellectual drunk I switch languages. I don't know if this is better or worse than the guy who recites Baudelaire while smashed.
EDIT: I wasn't drunk when I wrote this, just very very tired. The effect on my brain is the same, but the reason is different.
I know. I'm lame. B\ut I had to drive from Tomball back to my apartment so no drunkeness for Cat.

You know, I remember being all excited about when the next semester's course listings came out when I was an undergrad. Now that I'm a grad student who's able to pick all her classes, I'm not that excited. Why? Well next semester is filled with Monetary and Fiance courses. Which makes sense because we have a lot of financial economists.
So I'm going to be taking:
Applied Econometrics
The Health of Populations
Econometrics, Food and Health
You see those TWO courses with Econometrics in the title? I am planning on making Econometrics my bitch and not the other way around.
Plus you know a Double Whammy Health-Development economist feels better than a Finance-Development economist.
Can I get an Amen?

Dear Professor,
You're great, you really are, but when you ask me to expand upon the effect of slavery on long term growth, maybe you should realize that there are a ton of people who have already done so and I have nothing to add. Although combining the papers would be interesting. Still. I have enough to do for you class and others and I'm not smart enough to think of anything else.
No Love,
Me
For those of you who are interested, there is a negative impact of slavery on long term growth, and it does not seem to make much difference if there was only small scale slavery versus large scale. Which is why the South is a developing country still.

Because this somehow slipped my mind yesterday.
Yesterday, the Nobel Prize in Economics was awarded to a female for the first time ever.
Yeah, I'm filled with hope and joy and all that good stuff. Because it's like FINALLY female economists are being recognized as having lasting contributions to our field. I know it doesn't matter what gender you are when it comes to if you're good at economics or not (the majority of my department is female) but it's still a very heavily male dominated field.
WOO HOO

Update:
My department head and I are now on a first name basis after the party last night. Fueled by two margaritas (shut up, I'm a lightweight) we discussed everyone's "favorite" professor (she's amazing at what she does, but is very hard) and my pink laptop, because his daughter is getting a laptop and loves pink. And today in seminar we exchanged a look when that professor we had discussed was being loud. And then he passed by the office and saw my laptop and was like "Wow it IS pink!" So we're all tight and shit.
I'm going to be replicating a paper on the long term effect of Africa's slave trades on the continent's growth. All the data is on the author's website, so all I have to do is run regressions. And possibly find some things to expand on. Maybe looking at the empirical effect on the colonies (other than, you know, that slaves helped build this country) and how their current growth was impacted. Because (according to my other class) the South is a developing country.
And I left volunteering early to study, but I think I'm just going to sleep soon.
If anyone comes up with any ingenious ways to empirically measure culture in a regression, or an instrument for culture, please let me know. I will give you tons of credit for your awesome.

Instead of commenting on this year's winner, I'm going to provide some facts on the Nobel Peace Prize that people may not know.
People who were nominated (but did not win):
Adolf Hitler
Joseph Stalin
Ghandi
Benito Mussolini
Tsar Nikolai II
Leo Tolstoy
FDR
Winston Churchill (there is a common notion that he won the Nobel Peace Prize, he actually won the prize for Literature)
John Maynard Keynes
People who have declined:
Le Duc Tho (awarded for negotiating the Vietnam peace accord, and declined because of the situation in Vietnam)
And the International Committee for the Red Cross has won the Peace Prize the most times, with a total of three times.

Yesterday our professor said "Grad school is the best time of your lives! The clock isn't ticking yet."
Our response was to laugh.

The doctor gave me muscle relaxers and an extra strength pain killer.
Neither seem to be really working.
Sigh.

So today we had an awesome seminar speaker. His paper had a lot of noise in it, but it wasn't bad. What was amazing though were the quotes.
Quote of the Day:
Seminar Attendee: What about Hotelling?*
Speaker: He died a long time ago
*Hotelling's Lemma is an important part of microeconomic theory. It relates the supply of a good with the producer's profit. The speaker did not mention this in his paper, and instead took a different approach to the problem of firm behavior.

In honor of Talk Like a Pirate Day 2009 I shall gift you all with Pirate Metal.

Watching ANTM.
There's a girl who is all "I LOVE JESUS" which even I find annoying. But she said Jesus wanted her to be a model.
"Sil" (10:03:53 PM) : But you know it's right there in the bible. Timothy 5: 7-10 "And I say unto you hot ladies, go forth and flaunt yourselves on reality television. For it is my way to be righteous. And fierce."
You can double check that.

Tomorrow I'm leaving to head to San Antonio to celebrate Miss Avital's early quarter of a century.
We're going to be riding rollercoasters.
You know you're jealous.

1. There is a moving van blocking my car. Not a good thing when I want to leave you know?
2. Someone from upstairs is moving! Please let it be the people I keep hearing having sex.

Firebox.com is selling Star Trek Cologne. Well aftershave. And perfume.
For men there are two scents:
Tiberius, uses citron zest, black pepper and cedar top notes layered over a wooded spicy scent so that you too can smell like the BAMFest captain in all of history.
Red Shirt, for I guess if you are manly and heroic and have a death wish. Top notes of green mandarin, bergamot, and hints of lavender. One last lasting scent to remind your lady love of before you bite the dust.
But lest we forget the all important female fans!
PON FARR which you should all be able to know is named for the Vulcan Mating Cycle. Top notes: citrus, blackcurrant, water lily and lotus blossom; Base notes: sandalwood, peach and mulberry. To resist would be illogical (bad pun intended)
